A few hours ago the Associated Press reported a teen had committed suicide while many watched his dying process on a webcam for hours without intervening. What a tragedy for the teen's family, and what a tragedy for us all. The family's road ahead will be agonizingly difficult and painful. It's a tragedy for all of us when one teen (or adult) is overcome by their illness and seeks the only relief they can see for the moment--suicide. It's a tragedy because it means we are not doing near enough to help them and many others through these intense medical illnesses like depression and bipolar disorder.

Youth in foster care have challenging family histories, which call for special care. However, we should be careful not to grow discouraged if their needs are deeper than we alone can fill.

  • Discipling Incarcerated Youth
    Jerry Goebel
After decades of work with incarcerated youth around the world, I tend to classify religious outreaches into three different genres: conversion-based, worship-focused, and faith-education programs. Some of these programs are fear-based (eternal damnation), while others focus on the incentives of living a faithful life (healthier relationships, a life of meaning, service and salvation).
