Let Your Fingers Do the Talking

According to data from U.S. Nielsen, cell phone users do more texting than talking on their mobile devices.

Nielsen says the average mobile user sends about 357 texts a month these days, compared to making 204 calls. Youth boost these stats dramatically as users ages 13 to 17 send a whopping 1,742 texts a month -- 1,728 more than the average cell-using senior citizen sends. (MediaPost Publications)

Speak Your Mind on Music in Youth Ministry!

One of our partners is developing a new subscription-based student ministry music resource site. This site will include downloads of your favorite national artists (like BarlowGirl, Stellar Kart, and NEEDTOBREATHE), Bible studies that complement the music, music videos, chord charts, access to the artists and so much more--all in an effort to make your job easier!

They'd like you to help them craft exactly what you need by completing a two-minute survey of only eight questions. Just click on the link below. By participating, your name will go into a drawing for one of 10 prize packs, including 15 CDs and other great items. Thanks for your help!

    Money Smart for Youth Workers

Our editors predicted the current financila crisis way back in January. That's when we published out MONEY issue, which featured tons of valuable info on how youth workers can survive and even thrive on salaries that are less than a Wall Street CEO.

Maybe you didn't see that issue. Or maybe your concerns about finances have increased since January. Either way, youcan see plenty of fine YouthWorker Journal content at YouthWorker.com.

Money: 101 Fed Pushes Financial Education

In the wake of a financial crisis that's kept lawmakers stewing and arguing for a week over the best possible bailout plan, the Treasury Department has launched a campaign to educate youth about the importance--and dangers--of credit.

The campaign, which targets 18-to-24-year olds, includes videos, radio spots and an Internet game playable in English and Spanish. Some might say it might've been nice to do this bit of education before the nation's financial prospects fell down a well, but officials say the timing couldn't be better.

"I think recent events have highlighted the importance of understanding the impact that your financial decisions can have on your life," says Treasury spokeswoman Jennifer Zuccarelli. (The New York Times)

    Ministering to Diverse Youth

Our November/December issue on DIVERSITY features insights from Mark DeYmaz, Ryan Edwards, Phil Jackson, and Soong-Chan Rah. Here are some of their best sound bites:

Mark Deymaz: "Please do not say, 'I don't see color.' You need to see color just as God does! He didn't just create one fish in the sea or a single flower in the garden."

Ryan Edwards: "You always need to get outside of your comfort zone by networking, reading books, and sharing different ideas with people--even if it's things you don't agree with."

Phil Jackson: "Christ coming to earth is the main example of us being multi-cultural, multi-color, multi-class."

Soong-Chan Rah: "Churches that are not working to become more multi-cultural or adapting to a changing demographic are dying out."

YouthWorker Journal TOOLS Review: Generation Change: A Study for Teens on What God Says About Money

Dave Ramsey

The Lampo Group Inc., 2007, $169

www.daveramsey.com

In a culture where far too many 20-somethings are being overwhelmed by student loans, credit card debt, and the ever-rising cost of living, the need to teach teenagers how to manage their finances is more urgent than ever.

The fact is, a lot of students are not efficiently saving, spending, or giving, and if we don't teach them these important lessons now, by the time they learn them it may be too late.

Dave Ramsey is famous for having a passion to teach people how to manage money effectively. In this new curriculum designed for high school students, he attempts to teach them how to find value in God (not their stuff), how dangerous debt can be, how to save and use cash for what they want, and how to be a generous giver.

A 10- to 15-minute video introduction to each lesson leads participants into the student journal for discussion questions, exploration of Scripture, applicable activities and money-managing conclusions.

While Ramsey is famous for his financial strategies, he is not well known for his ability to communicate to high school students. In his videos, we see him speaking with a small teenage contingent, which at times seems bored or disconnected. If the students in the video aren't resonating, it may be even harder for him to connect with the ones watching at home.

If used to their full potential, the tools provided here really could help youth start out their financial life on the right foot; but for what you will pay for this curriculum, you will be surprised to find there are only four lessons and that a lot of the energy to make it effective will have to come from you.

If you want the assistance from an expert financial advisor and you can afford it, this is a good way to start teaching youth fiscan responsibility; but be aware you will have to be fully committed to, and passionate about, your students learning this material if you don't want it to go over their heads or in one ear and out the other.

-- Reviewer Adam Griffin in a Young Life partner and director of youth ministry, Lamb of God Lutheran Church, Flower Mound, Texas.
